In managing insomnia, non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches can be employed. Non-pharmacological methods are effective and should be considered as first line treatment. methods such as sleep hygiene, stimulus control therapy and relaxation techniques are discussed. The various medications commonly used to treat insomnia are: benzodiazepine sedatives, nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics, antihistamines,
and antidepressants with higher sedation properties.
